ies-risk assessment. Participants will learn to classify patients according to their caries-risk, gain
knowledge and skills for caries diagnosis, and distinguish arrested or active caries in occlusal,
proximal and root surfaces. The course will also address restorative and preventative treatment
options for patients of all age groups. Objectives Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
Describe components of a caries-risk based prevention program
Discuss development of dental caries

Dr. Luiz A. Pimenta is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Dental Ecology. He comes
to UNC from the School of Dentistry at Piracicaba - State University of Campinas (Unicamp)
- Sao Paulo Brazil, where he was Full Professor at the Department of Restorative Dentistry from
1992 until 2006. Dr. Pimenta is certified in Restorative Dentistry and practices full-time with
emphasis in preventive, restorative, and esthetic dentistry. Dr. Pimenta has presented many
lectures and continuing education courses regionally, nationally, and internationally and has
published over 50 scientific articles and 90 abstracts, and has co-written 3 textbook chapters. .0206, Infection Control in Health care Facilities Rule, that requires there be one person des-
ignated in each health care facility (i.e dental office practice) that has completed the certified
or state approved .0206 Infection Control Course. The course will provide the most updated
information relating to bloodborne pathogens, preventing and controlling major sites of dental
associated infections, decontamination, disinfection, sterilization and waste management, per-
sonal protective equipment, hand hygiene, and medical asepsis, occupational health, and isola-
tion and communicable disease precautions according to CDC and OSAP Guidelines. Objectives Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
List the elements of the pertinent NC Communicable Disease Laws that apply to the
prevention of bloodborne pathogens
Describe the epidemiology of dental care associated bloodborne pathogens transmission
Discuss the principles and methods of decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization
of equipment, instruments, and waterlines used in dental practices
Demonstrate the principles of hand hygiene and medical asepsis
Demonstrate appropriate selection and use of recommended personal protective

UNC Chapel Hill, School of Medicine Karen Hoffmann is the Associate Director of the Statewide Program for Infection Control and
Epidemiology and Clinical Instructor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University
of North Carolina School of Medicine. Her responsibilities include education, research, and
consulting to health care institutions throughout North Carolina. Ms. Hoffmann has over 20
years of experience in infection control epidemiology. She has participated in and served as a
consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Nosocomial Infections

MAHEC Dental, CME, Allied Health Education Credit These courses have been approved for Fellowship and Mastership credits from the Academy
of General Dentistry and DANB CDE credit. MAHEC has been designated as an approved program provider by the North Carolina
Constituent of the Academy of General Dentistry. As such, this program providers
continuing education is accepted by the AGD for credit applicable toward membership
maintenance and Fellowship/Mastership credit. The current term of approval is
11/1/04 - 11/1/08. AGD Code #217248. DANB approval indicates that a continuing education course appears to meet certain
specifications as described in the DANB Recertification Guidelines. DANB does not,
however, endorse or recommend any particular continuing education course and is not
responsible for the quality of any course content. SPICE: This course has been approved for 6.0 hours of Fellowship and Mastership credits
from the Academy of General Dentistry and 6.0 hours DANB credit. CARIOLOGY: This course has been approved for 3.0 hours of Fellowship and
